UK Bitcoin Platforms Enter A Licensing Window Before 2027 Rules

Bitcoin platforms serving the UK are already inside an important regulatory application window, even though the country’s wider crypto regime remains roughly a year away. The Financial Conduct Authority opened the gateway on September 30, 2026. Its planned application period runs to February 28, 2027, ahead of the new regime’s expected start on October 25, 2027.

TL;DR: The UK crypto authorisation gateway is open. Existing registration does not automatically become permission under the broader regime, and submitting an application does not establish that it has been approved.

The application window comes before the rules take effect

The FCA’s regime overview says firms can apply through its Connect system. The legal framework follows regulations made in February 2026, while the regulator’s final rules were published on June 30. The expected October 2027 commencement date is therefore distinct from both the application opening and the earlier publication of the rules.

According to the FCA’s registration guidance, businesses registered under the existing money laundering regulations do not automatically convert into authorised firms under the Financial Services and Markets Act regime. They must seek the relevant permission. Firms already authorised for other financial activities may need to vary their permissions to cover the crypto activities they intend to conduct.

The regulator’s gateway guidance expects applications made within the designated window generally to be determined before the new regime begins. It also describes a conditional saving provision for qualifying applications still awaiting a final decision. Applications can be submitted outside the window, but the transition arrangements and ability to continue business are not identical in every case.

For readers comparing Bitcoin providers, this makes status language important. Existing registration, an application in progress and an authorisation granted under the new framework describe different stages. A platform’s statement that it has applied should be read as an application claim, with the eventual outcome assessed separately.

What broader oversight means for Bitcoin services

In its June announcement of the final rules, the FCA described requirements covering financial resilience, market integrity and consumer treatment. The framework includes capital and stress-testing provisions and measures addressing insider dealing and manipulation. The Consumer Duty will also form part of the standards applying to relevant firms.

These requirements concern the businesses through which customers trade, hold or otherwise access crypto assets. A Bitcoin customer may encounter several such functions in one service, but the underlying regulatory questions remain specific: which legal entity provides the service, what activity it performs and which permissions it holds.

Broader oversight can change firms’ compliance obligations and the standards against which their conduct is assessed. It cannot set Bitcoin’s market price or remove losses arising from price movements. That distinction matters when assessing claims that regulatory approval makes an asset itself safe or guarantees a commercial outcome.

With the gateway open, the immediate story is the preparation and application process ahead of commencement. The milestone to watch for an individual provider is an actual authorisation decision and its scope. The sector-wide milestone remains the expected October 2027 start, rather than the date a business first sends its paperwork to the FCA.
