Glassnode’s New Bitcoin Metrics Put Dollars Ahead Of Coin Counts

Bitcoin investors have another way to examine the market’s cost basis after Glassnode added four invested-capital metrics on October 16. Their purpose is to describe where acquisition value sits across the network, rather than treating every coin as equally informative about the money represented by a position.

TL;DR: The new measures distinguish capital-weighted cost bases from coin-weighted ones. This explains the methodology; it does not present a live Bitcoin price signal or an automatic trading rule.

Why Dollar Weighting Changes The Average

Invested Capital Price weights holdings by the acquisition capital they represent. Glassnode contrasts that with Realized Price, which describes the average cost basis per coin. A coin last moved at a high price represents more acquisition value than an equally sized holding last moved when Bitcoin was much cheaper.

The provider’s formula weights acquisition prices by their associated capital. Under that definition, Invested Capital Price cannot fall below Realized Price; the two coincide only when all relevant holdings have the same cost basis. A wider gap indicates more dispersion in acquisition prices.

For Bitcoin, this particular price metric uses the price when each coin last moved on-chain. That qualification matters: an observed transfer is not a complete brokerage record. The resulting level is a model built from blockchain history, rather than an audited account of every holder’s cash expenditure.

A consequence of the weighting is that coins acquired at extremely low prices contribute relatively little. The model can therefore respond differently from a coin-weighted measure when substantial capital arrives at higher prices. That difference is its analytical purpose, not evidence that one average is universally superior.

Quantiles Describe The Distribution Behind The Average

The accompanying Invested Capital Quantiles divide acquisition capital into ten portions by cost basis. The 50% line, for example, marks the price below which half of the modelled invested capital sits. It is not the same as saying half of all coins or half of all people bought below that price.

Glassnode says the quantile series uses address-level average acquisition prices. Its documentation distinguishes that approach from Bitcoin calculations based directly on unspent transaction outputs. The methodological difference means related charts need not produce identical distributions.

A third measure, Invested Capital in Profit, sums the acquisition value associated with holdings whose modelled cost basis is below the current price. It does not measure the size of their unrealised gains. The companion loss metric applies the opposite classification.

That distinction avoids a common reading error. A dollar of acquisition capital classified as profitable is still a dollar of original modelled cost, regardless of whether its gain is small or large. Adding the profitable capital does not produce a total profit figure.

Together, the tools separate three questions: the weighted average entry level, how acquisition capital is distributed and how much of that capital sits above or below spot. Any market interpretation still depends on matching the metric’s date and methodology to the question being asked.
