Bitcoin ETF Fees Tell Only Part Of The Ownership-Cost Story

Bitcoin ETF comparisons often start with the annual fee. They become more useful when they also account for the price paid to enter and exit a position. Published terms for Morgan Stanley’s MSBT and BlackRock’s IBIT illustrate how those two costs operate on different timescales.

TL;DR: A lower annual charge can reduce ongoing costs, while trading spreads and premiums affect execution. This is an analysis of existing fund terms, not a newly announced fee cut.

Small Percentage Gaps Become Dollar Differences

Morgan Stanley’s second-quarter MSBT product profile lists a 0.14% total expense ratio. BlackRock’s IBIT fact sheet dated September 30, 2026 lists a 0.25% sponsor fee. Both products provide exchange-traded exposure to Bitcoin.

On a hypothetical position whose value stayed at $10,000 for a full year, those rates correspond to roughly $14 and $25 respectively: an $11 difference. This is simple arithmetic, not a forecast of either fund’s return. Actual charges depend on asset values over time, and the calculation excludes transaction costs.

The difference accumulates with holding duration, but it should not be confused with a guarantee of better realised performance. Both issuers describe products exposed to Bitcoin’s price risk. A smaller recurring charge does not protect the position from a fall in the underlying asset.

The fund documents also matter beyond their fee boxes. MSBT’s profile identifies its custody arrangements and benchmark. IBIT’s fact sheet describes its Bitcoin-tracking objective and legal structure. Those are separate dimensions of a product comparison, rather than reasons to infer identical operating arrangements from similar names.

The Spread Is Paid When A Trade Happens

The SEC’s bid-and-ask glossary describes the bid-ask spread as the gap between the highest available buying price and the lowest selling price. Buying at the ask and immediately selling at the bid can produce a loss even if the fund’s underlying asset value has not moved.

A hypothetical 0.10% execution cost on $10,000 is $10. That example is not a measured spread for either fund. It simply shows why a single transaction cost can be similar in size to an annual fee difference, especially for someone comparing short holding periods.

There is a further distinction between the share price and net asset value. The SEC explains that exchange-traded shares can trade above or below their underlying NAV. A premium or discount can therefore affect the outcome independently of the annual charge.

No current spread measurements are being compared here, so the published fee rates do not support a claim that one fund is cheapest for every trade. They establish the recurring-charge difference. A fuller comparison requires the current quote, any brokerage charge and the relationship between market price and asset value at execution.
