Key Points

  • Gemini set a Guinness world record for the largest aerial display of a currency symbol with 1,000 drones forming the Bitcoin symbol.
  • The display took place at SXSW in Austin, Texas to celebrate the establishment of a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

Gemini, a popular cryptocurrency exchange, recently made history by creating the largest aerial display of a currency symbol. This was achieved using 1,000 drones to form the symbol of Bitcoin.

The record-breaking event took place on the evening of March 13 at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. The spectacle was part of a celebration marking the introduction of a strategic Bitcoin reserve following the signing of an executive order by the US President.

The Aerial Display

The drone show, which lasted for 20 minutes, was a sight to behold. A total of 1,000 drones were used to form the iconic Bitcoin symbol lighting up the night sky. These drones were supplied by Sky Elements, a Texas-based company with an impressive 12 Guinness World Records to its name.

The next day, Gemini shared a photo of the Bitcoin-themed drone show and their newly acquired Guinness World Record certificate on their official account. The certificate confirmed that Gemini had indeed achieved the largest aerial display of a currency symbol formed by drones.

More than Just a Bitcoin Symbol

However, the Bitcoin symbol wasn’t the only image created during the light show. The drones also formed visuals of spaceships blasting off, an astronaut planting the American flag on Mars, and a giant woolly mammoth.

The woolly mammoth image was a nod to Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss’s previous investment in Colossal Biosciences. This startup is working on bringing extinct species, like the woolly mammoth, back to life through genetic engineering.

Additionally, the drones displayed the message “Go where the dollars won’t,” a slogan from Gemini’s campaign launched last November. This message was intended to boost confidence in Bitcoin, particularly in light of the news about the strategic Bitcoin reserve.

This strategic Bitcoin reserve was established following the first White House Crypto Summit on March 7. The US President signed an executive order to create a national strategic Bitcoin reserve and a U.S. digital asset stockpile. This reserve is expected to be compiled using Bitcoin held by the U.S. federal government, estimated to be around 200,000 BTC.
