Occasional BTC News contributor Paul Berger links to this New York Times story on the fallout from the disappearance and rescue of a Chinese restaurant delivery man.
The short version is that Ming Kuang Chen was stuck in an elevator for four days, during which time the security company responsible for the building didn’t notice the elevator was stuck, didn’t connect Chen’s numerous intercom calls for help to the elevator they didn’t know was stuck, didn’t see Chen on the monitor showing the camera feed from the elevator they didn’t know was stuck, and didn’t investigate the intercom calls despite the monitor panel showing the calls were coming from the elevator in which Chen was stuck.
During the four-day search for Chen, the police broke down at least one door in the building, arrested a man who had a suspicious BBQ sauce stain on his shirt and inadvertently announced that Chen is an illegal immigrant. Possibly he can use the settlement one hopes he’ll get from the security company to defend himself and suppport his family when the immigration people lock him up.
