Press Club: Not inviting Guckert would be censorship
Last week I scoffed at a Free Republic devotee who wrote in to Romenesko’s letters arguing that not inviting Guckert-Gannon to be on the National Press Club’s panel about who’s a journalist would be censorship. “Neither Jeff Gannon nor James Guckert,” I opined, “have a First Amendment right to appear at the National Press Club.”
I was wrong. I admit it. According to no less an authority than NPC president Rick Dunham, who apparently told Roll Call Magazine that he intends to ask Guckert why the latter thinks he’s a journalist, not inviting Guckert would be tantamount to censorship.
“He should answer that question. The alternative is to censor somebody. We believe in free speech and tough questions.”
So, Kristinn, if you’re out there, mea culpa: you were right and I was wrong. We all have a right to be on a press club panel. I just hope the poor guy survives that bruising interrogation.
Oy.
