A weblog proprietor calling himself John Goldstone is soliciting donations for a reward to be paid to anyone who asks President George W. Bush, in a public forum, how many times he has been arrested.

The weblog, One Simple Question, bills itself as “The World’s Shortest Blog.” At last check, the site had collected $2,386 in donations.

Another, anonymous blogger has offered an additional bounty of up to $6,000 to be paid if the question is televised in prime time and the answer differs from the president’s previous responses.

Although the question would most likely be posed either by a reporter, which seems unlikely, or by a participant in one of Mr. Bush’s casual “Ask President Bush” campaign events, the offer so far has been publicized almost exclusively on liberal-oriented web sites.

Many of the sites are widely read, but given the attention paid by the Bush campaign to screening audiences at the president’s campaign appearances and the “Ask President Bush” events, the chances that a ringer could slip in to ask the question seem remote.

John Goldstone, the name used by the One Simple Question author, is also the name of a movie producer whose credits include “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Monty Python’s Life of Brian.”

The offer has yet to gain attention from traditional press outlets, and it is not known if the Bush-Cheney campaign is aware of it.

This is at least the second time money has been offered in connection to the president’s past activities. Garry Trudeau, creator of the satirical Doonesbury comic strip, earlier offered a reward of $10,000 to anyone who can personally verify that Mr. Bush attended National Guard drills in Alabama.

That reward, which Trudeau says will be donated to the USO should a credible witness to the president’s Alabama National Guard service step forward, remains unclaimed.
