“M-m-m-m-m-m-miscalculation”

The interview isn’t online yet that I could find, but Reuters quotes the New York Times as saying that Bush* acknowledged he’d made “a miscalculation of what the conditions would be” in post-invasion Iraq. Not a mistake, but that’s awfully close. However, the president immediately retreated to neverland.

But he insisted that the 17-month-long insurgency was the unintended by-product of a “swift victory” against Saddam Hussein’s military, the Times reported.

Bush said his strategy had been “flexible enough” to respond. “We’re adjusting to our conditions” in places like Najaf, the paper quoted him as saying.

Sort of like Custer adjusted to his conditions.

UPDATE: The Times story is now online but isn’t much more generous with details than the Reuters one. No transcript to be found. It does note that Bush* says he doesn’t think Kerry lied about his service in Vietnam but he won’t condemn the ads calling Kerry a liar. That would be because he’s chickenshit, but the story doesn’t doesn’t mention that.

*if that’s his real name
