Iraq fall down go boom
Things in Iraq are obviously far worse than is generally being reported. No one is in control.
Saboteurs have attacked about 20 oil pipelines in southern Iraq, reducing exports from the key oil producing region by at least one third, a top oil official said Thursday. The cluster of pipelines was attacked late Wednesday in Berjasiya, 20 miles southwest of the southern city of Basra, an official with the state-run South Oil Co. said on condition of anonymity. The pipelines, which connect the Rumeila oilfields to Berjasiya, were still ablaze Thursday.
Think about this. The oil industry is being sabotaged with impunity, several cities are completely off limits to both US and Iraqi government troops, no cities appear to be entirely under our/their control, people in the government are setting other people in the government up for assassination, and two clerics, one a youthful, uneducated paranoid and the other an elderly Iranian-born gent with a heart condition, are the only people in the country who appear capable of mobilizing any serious number of citizens in support of a cause. And we’re still talking about a national election there in four months. I suppose if the Venezuelans can do better than Florida, it’s possible the Iraqis can too, but even with the US supporting his opposition, Hugo Chavez didn’t face near the challenges confronting Iraq.
Our government is a carnival geek among governments.
