Colin Powell set to endorse a Democrat?

Colin Powell dropped some hints yesterday in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he’s looking outside the GOP for a candidate to endorse.

Powell, who served as the closer for the Bush administration’s sale of an Iraq invasion with an astonishingly dishonest speech to the United Nations, the world and, most importantly, credulous Washington pundits, is still inexplicably regarded as someone whose opinion matters and whose endorsement would help a Democratic candidate.

Maybe that’s true. Maybe a Powell endorsement for Obama or (considerably less likely) Clinton would attract more Republicans and independents than it would drive anti-occupation Democrats and independents screaming into the night (assuming anything would make Obama supporters do that).

It may not matter, though. Even if Powell does wield as much credibility and clout as his admirers assume, his history suggests that he won’t exercise it in time to do any good.
