If Pelosi were poor, she’d be arrested for loitering in Congress

Nancy Pelosi has reiterated her opposition to impeaching president Bush, saying that doing so “would be very divisive in our country” and that despite increasing heat from constituents and fellow lawmakers, impeachment remains off the table.

She also appears to think the issue is all about her, saying that “I go through airports, and people have [impeachment] buttons as if they knew I was coming.” And in an interview last year, she complained about activists protesting the Iraq occupation and calling for impeachment outside her San Francsico home, resentfully noting that “if they were poor and they were sleeping on my sidewalk, they would be arrested for loitering, but because they have ‘Impeach Bush’ across their chest, it’s the First Amendment.”

Curse those people for expressing their opinions in the same airports Pelosi uses. Damn that First Amendment. And while we’re at it, screw the poor, too; maybe we can’t arrest Bush and Cheney for wrecking the country, but we can still arrest anyone who sleeps on sidewalks reserved for the soles of the Speaker’s elegant shoes.

It’s increasingly hard to believe that Pelosi is a Democrat. It’s harder to believe that she really thinks an attempt to hold Bush and Cheney accountable for their crimes would be more damaging to the country than allowing them to go unchallenged has been. And it’s impossible to believe that she takes her oath of office seriously.

Memo to San Francisco Democrats: Nancy Pelosi really doesn’t like most of you. Do us all a favor and boot her ass out of Congress.

I hear you loud and CLEAR! Pelosi is an embarrassment to every person who votes with the Democratic Party. The very IDEA that this woman believes that protecting those two criminals from SOME kind, ANY kind, of punishment for their crimes is, in itself, criminal.

I have lived in San Francisco for the last 8, almost 9, years now. It is a beautiful place - if you don’t notice that it is a community based largely on class. People here talk of the “homeless problem”, as though people without homes should be treated like pests and not human beings. It is no surprise to me that Pelosi would make snide comments about the poor, for she is a member of the privileged class. I have thought long and hard about why this woman would take impeachment off the table for the crooks who run our government, and I can only come to two conclusions: Either she is in league with those horrid men and protects them because she agrees with them, or she recognizes that she is an ineffectual, greasy politician more interested in her own wealth and standing than she is in the well-being of our once great country. She would, after all, be in charge if the Bushies were run out of office.

Her statements that impeachment would never get the votes needed to succeed are irrelevant. To not TRY, to not even give this much needed move a CHANCE, drives a nail in our country’s coffin. And *we* are the country trying to bring “democracy” to other countries? Please! WE NEED DEMOCRACY HERE FIRST! And a woman who won’t do her elected job should be democratically walloped down a few pegs. I dream of a day when Nancy Pelosi herself is sleeping in one of the many doorways here in SF that are populated by the homeless. And on that day, I will assert my Constitutional right in this class-driven society and spit right in her eye.

The op-ed and graphic in yesterday’s NYT (Sat) does suggest the Dems got something accomplished.

I agree, it’s not enough, even if it will be use as a fig leaf. But, it is a reminder on the potential there.

I hadn’t seen that. The thing on the graphic that jumped out at me was the increase in “symbolic” legislation, which more than doubled from 2006 to 2007. I have to question the assertion that “Congress reasserted itself as a rightful check on the executive branch, significantly stepping up its oversight on a wide range of important subjects.” Yes, there were a lot of hearings, and kudos to Waxman in particular, but few of them have borne significant fruit. You’re right, though–there is potential, but it lacks a realizing engine.
