In which Hugh Hewitt restores Bush’s credibility on Iraq

Right-wing talk show host and hardened War on Terra® veteran Hugh Hewitt came away from a Wednesday sit-down with president Bush convinced that the president can regain public confidence on Iraq by sharing his grasp of the situation and commitment to victory with Americans just as he shared it with Hewitt and nine other right-wing talkers.

What did Bush say that gave Hewitt such confidence in the president?

Well, we don’t know. Hewitt can’t tell us because the chat was off the record, and he only wishes that the president would “engage in long interviews that would allow the American public to see that grasp and that commitment.”

Poor Mr. Hewitt, poor Mr. Bush, poor Americans, trapped in a classic Catch-22. Hewitt is ethically proscribed from revealing the magic words, the president is legally proscribed from conducting long, coherent interviews about Iraq on the record, and Americans are logistically proscribed from donning Hugh Hewitt or Laura Ingraham masks and descending ten at a time on the White House for our own revelatory, confidential chats with the president. Life is so unfair.
