“Iranian” IEDs—made in Texas?

When the U.S. military claimed two weeks ago that the government of Iran was sending IEDs into Iraq, the evidence it provided was not very convincing, and the administration was forced to back down from the claim almost immediately.

Now we hear that one week ago, U.S. forces in Iraq discovered “the best evidence yet that the deadliest roadside bombs in Iraq are manufactured in Iran.”

The evidence?

Maj. Marty Weber, an “explosives expert,” says it’s “a no-brainer.”

According to the Times, Major Weber said that “use of passive infrared sensors, or P.I.R.’s, [is] one of the strongest markers of Iranian involvement…’Every P.I.R. in Iraq has been RadioShack, Digigard or Everspring,’ Major Weber said.”

Everspring Industry Co. Ltd is a Taiwanese company.

Digigard is made by Paradox Security Systems of Montreal, Canada.

And RadioShack’s headquarters is in Fort Worth, Texas.

Looks like another slam dunk.

Update: AHA! Now the N.Y. Times, in an article with the headline “U.S. Displays Bomb Parts Said to Be Made in Iran” reveals the source of the PVC pipe used to make the part-Texan IEDs:

One box said in English that the tubes inside had been made in the United Arab Emirates and another said, in Arabic, “plastic made in Haditha,” a restive Sunni town on the Euphrates River in Iraq.

And the machined copper liners or caps? TPMmuckraker quotes a Wall St. Journal article on the topic, in which military spokesman Captain Combs admits that he doesn’t know where the caps come from or whether they’re made in Iran.

Case closed! The bombing begins in five minutes!

Iranian IEDsmade in Texas? - Debate Politics Forums Says:

[…] Iranian IEDsmade in Texas? The Bush administration was never able to prove that IED’s used in Iraq actually came from Iran, and their argument was also very unconvincing. I suppose, now that we know where the parts actually came from (Radio Shack), that Bush will attempt to convince Americans that Texas is actually part of Iran.
