Guantanamo Bay prison suicides called “asymmetrical warfare” by camp boss

Admiral Harry Harris told reporters today that suicides by three inmates at the Guantanamo Bay prison were acts of war, not desperation. The inmates hung themselves in the maximum security area of the prison. One had just ended a hunger strike.

Harris said that “We have men here in Guantanamo who are committed jihadists, al-Qaida and Taliban. They’re continuing to fight against us here. These are dangerous men who will do anything they can to gain support for their cause.”

Well, they’ve pretty much exhausted their arsenal now.

Like most of Guantanamo’s prisoners, the three were among those who were being held indefinitely without charge or legal representation. Harris contends that the apparent coordination of the suicides is evidence of a conspiracy against the US and that they “were not an act of desperation, but an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us.”

He also described the guard who first noticed one of the prisoners hanging from the ceiling of his cell as “alert.” Perhaps a less alert guard would have mistaken the sight for a routine interrogation or a late-night exercise session.

Pity we can’t execute the three for this heinous assault on all we hold dear, isn’t it? Maybe once rigor sets in we can stand them up against a wall and go through the motions.

Asymmetrical warfare. I guess if all the Guantanamo inmates kill themselves, their victory will be complete and we’ll have no choice but to surrender. Adios, America.

Great post! But one of my favorite quotes from the BBC: “A top US official has described the suicides of three detainees at the US base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as a ‘good PR move to draw attention’.”

Powerfuls seem to be trying to recreate the concept of Evil, and the ‘people club’ is very exclusive these days. Islamic ‘terrorists’: nothing of OUR humanity can possibly apply to them.
