CIA’s McCarthy guilty of driving while Democrat?

BTC News White House writer Eric Brewer asked Scott McClellan today if the CIA had responded to White House inquiries about the political affiliation of CIA personnel. McClellan said he hadn’t seen the Washington Post story Eric cited. But recently dismissed CIA officer Mary McCarthy’s work in the Clinton administration’s National Security Council and her donations to Democratic politicians have raised eyebrows among right-wing commentators so high that we fear permanent disfigurement.

McCarthy was fired last week for, the CIA says, unauthorized contacts with reporters and leaking classified information. The CIA hasn’t specified what information she is alleged to have leaked and pointedly refused to verify the most common assumption, that the information concerned the CIA’s dispersed gulag of secret prisons housing suspects in the War on Terra®. That assumption underlies the more elaborate of the right-wing conspiracy theories springing up around McCarthy.

The CIA says McCarthy “personally admitted” to both offenses; her lawyer says McCarthy “did not confess, orally or in writing, to leaking classified information.” Lawyers have been known to lie, but given the ease with which the CIA could debunk that assertion, and given that McCarthy hasn’t been charged with anything and will apparently still receive her pension — she was fired ten days before her retirement date — it seems unlikely he’s lying.

But there are two arenas in which McCarthy’s guilt is undeniable: her political affiliation and her employment history. Combine those with the assumption that she leaked details of the CIA’s gulag to Washington Post reporter Dana Priest, and voila! You have a conspiracy theory.

McCarthy knows Rand Beers and Richard Clarke, the high-profile counterterrorism officials who left the Bush administration from frustration over the administration’s incompetence and disinterest, from her service on the NSC. (Beers made a statement on her behalf after her firing.) She knows Sandy Berger, who is known by the right to have stolen and destroyed documents that would have proved Congressman Curt Weldon’s allegations about the Able Danger program having identified several 911 hijackers before the attacks. Among the candidates she has supported is Weldon’s opponent in the upcoming elections, Joe Sestak — yet another Clinton NSC official — to whom she contributed $350.

Obviously, then, what we have here is a conspiracy orchestrated by Clintonistas to generally interfere with the War on Terra® by exposing Bush administration violations of international and domestic law, and more specifically to silence Curt Weldon, who has inexplicably failed to persuade his Republican colleagues in Congress to open a full court press on the Able Danger matter.

Someone should look into that last problem as well: did McCarthy or Berger get to Weldon’s House intelligence committee chairman, Michigan Republican Peter Hoekstra?

If you find all or any of this confusing, take heart: Major Chaz at Mind in the Qatar has patiently assembled an Able Danger-like chart illustrating the connections between McCarthy, the Post’s Dana Priest, the afore-mentioned Clinton administration officials, and Fidel Castro. (The Castro reference is probably an effort at humor, but you never know.)

If the chart doesn’t do it for you, the non-partisan, troop-supporting Move America Forward spells it out.

Melanie Morgan announced that Move America Forward is going to “commit its full focus and resources to uncovering the facts to find out who is involved in undermining our nation’s fight against terrorism.

“The conduct by Clinton Administration NSC officials stinks to high heaven. We have Clinton’s NSC top dog, Sandy Berger, stuffing into his underwear highly classified documents about the Clinton Administration’s mishandling of the terrorist threat. Then you have a former Clinton Administration NSC official, Mary McCarthy, leaking top-secret information about our efforts to detain terrorists to the press.

“A pattern is starting to emerge of former Clinton Administration officials working to undermine the fight against terrorism so that they may advance their political motivations. We will not tolerate this and we will work to expose all those who may be involved in this shameful conduct,” concluded Morgan.

You know what? It’s probably true: these people, and some millions more, really are trying to undermine the Bush administration’s War on Terra®. And they should, because it isn’t working, and a lot of people are unnecessarily dead because of it.

So there you have it. Treason, my friends: treason. And driving while Democrat.

Does all of this fit in some way with Hillary’s effort to claim the White House travel agency had committed criminal acts in order to justify their termination? I don’t like that woman and, increasingly, think that anyone (Sandy Berger) associated with her or her husband (both of whom are now clearly identified as war mongers) is unworthy of trust. Not that I’m paranoid or anything…

    A few corrections:
    1) The documents that Sandy Berger handled were copies of the originals and he never touched the actual originals. What he did was certainly wrong, but no information was actually lost.
    2) The CIA has admonished Weldon several times for wasting their resources following wild goose chases of informants even less reliable than CurveBall.
    3) Weldon demonstrated this last month with his wild claims that Bin Laden was dead. He was told at the time his source was unreliable, and he touted the story away (until the lastest Bin Laden tape).
    4) People like Clarke and McCarthy have deep knowledge of security and policy. They are clearly people that disagree with the Bush/Republican policies and prefer the Clinton/Democrat policies. They are certainly entitled to support candidates that share their view. These people were not party political activists looking for an issue, but rather experts in their field that picked candidates with whom they agree.

David, I agree with all your points, hence the “driving while Democrat.” I was just assuming the standard paranoid talking points for the sake of brevity.
