The Bad Crow news roundup

Despite our best efforts, we can’t comment on all the news and events we run across. Following is a summary of news items covered on our “Bad Crow” sister blog during the past week.

  • The military junta in Burma is in the process of moving the government from the capitol city of Rangoon to the newly-built, highly inaccessible cityof Pyinmana, apparently on instructions from astrologers who believe the US is about to invade the country.
  • Spain has joined several other countries in investigating whether the CIA has conducted activities connected with the agency’s “extraordinary rendition” program on their respective territories. Italy has requested the extradition of nearly two dozen CIA agents charged in connection with the kidnapping of a Muslim cleric in Milan. We’ll have more on this soon.
  • A new Gallup poll shows 54% of respondents saying that the invasion of Iraq was a mistake, and 60% say the invasion “wasn’t worth it.” The same poll shows approval of the president’s handling of Iraq at 35%.
  • The Government Accountability Office says top officials at the Food and Drug Administration decided well in advance of the review process to deny an application for over-the-counter sales of the “morning after” pill.
  • US troops in Iraq raided an Interior Ministry prison and found starved and tortured prisoners. There’s some question as to how much moral authority we have on the issue.
  • The Pentagon has acknowledged that contrary to denials issued as recently as last week, the US used white phosphorous munitions as incendiary weapons during the assault on Falluja last year.

Why would the astrologers predict Burma when it is obvious that the target for the next invasion is Syria (er, formal invasion, that is.)?
