Political Strategy 101

Ed Stephan points out (rightly) that the Democratic Party is based on the cities. Urban areas tend to be full of the people we represent, and tends to inculcate values that we share. The red-state/blue-state regional divide is illusory. The real divide in America is between rural and urban.

Where Stephan goes wrong is when he argues that we should emphasize and underscore the urban character of our party. According to him we should say: We’re the party of the cities. We should say it loud and say it proud.

Okay, repeat after me: In order to win elections you need to convince the people who don’t already agree with you. Focusing exclusively on the cities will accelerate our decay in rural and suburban regions, which combined with the today’s pro-rural gerrymander will condemn us to minority status.

Class dismissed.

    Mike Says:

What Democrats really need to do is learn to counter Republican rhetoric. Example: Democrats are baby killers because they are pro-choice, and believe that a woman should have control over her body. The Democrats counter – Republicans are perverts because they don’t want to abort the babies of rape victims. In fact, Republican fathers rape their daughters and want them to bear their children. The only way to counter this Republican perversion is abortion.

The problem is that Democrats are generally reasonable people who don’t see the world in terms of black and white. This kind of thinking does not come naturally to us. If we want to gain political power, we need to start, but at what cost? Karl Rove knows best that you can’t win in politics with honor and integrity.
